The city did it because standard time — as set by the railroads in 1883 — put the city in the Central time belt, a broad zone whose jagged boundaries extended west to Texas and east to Pittsburgh and Buffalo. Under Central Standard Time, the sun rose and set 33 minutes earlier than when Cleveland used “local time,” which meant less daylight after work or school.
