As Barbara Hafer announced today that she would drop out of the race for the 12th District U.S. House seat, one of her criticisms of Democratic nominee Mark Critz seems to have legs. the Washington newspaper Roll Call reported today that Critz, the late John P. Murtha’s district director, “attended a 2005 meeting of defense contractors and lobbyists andoffered the Congressman’s support for an earmark project that ended inthe criminal convictions of three men last year.”

The project involved Coherent Systems, which, as the PG’s Dennis Roddy wrote last week “was a defense company later acquired by Argon ST, a larger defensefirm. both were represented by PMA Associates, a now-defunct defenselobbying firm headed by Pittsburgh native and Murtha friend PaulMagliocchetti. Coherent’s former CEO, Rick Ianieri, later pleaded guilty to variousfraud charges, including allegations that he received a kickback fromofficials at another defense firm, Kuchera Defense Systems, located inWindber, Somerset County. Kuchera remains the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation.both its plant and PMA’s Virginia headquarters were the subjects ofseparate raids by federal agents as part of separate probes. PMA didnot represent Kuchera.”

The Roll Call report, which followed Hafer’s call for more information about Critz’s relationship to Coherent, states that according to documents, Critz attended a meeting in which Coherent was present and said Murtha would support the project being discussed — a high-tech communications system for soldiers on the battlefield.

“Critz left midway through the meeting, according to the minutes, butbefore departing, ‘Mark Critz explained that Congressman Murthasupports what was accomplished at this meeting and would like a followon meeting scheduled. He said this group should continue to rallygovernment agencies on this issue and can expect full support fromCongressman Murtha.’”
